Combining Safety I/O and General Purpose I/O In A Single Device: Turck's Hybrid Safety Block I/O Module for CIP Safety

Adding to their collection of fieldbus technology products, Turck has announced the release of their Hybrid Safety Block I/O Module for CIP Safety over EtherNet/IP.

Turck's hybrid safety concept combines both safety I/O and general purpose I/O in a single, rugged, on-machine, remote I/O device. The CIP Safety (TBIP) module expands the existing hybrid safety offering, which already includes an option for PROFIsafe over PROFINET.

Both IP67 hybrid modules can be adapted to the actual signal requirements of an installation through the use of configurable input/output points and by leveraging the flexibility of IO-Link. On the safety side, the hybrid modules offer two safety inputs for connecting safety sensors, such as light curtains or emergency stop buttons. Two additional safety channels can be used as either inputs or outputs. The general purpose (non-safety related) side includes four configurable discrete inputs/outputs capable of switching up to two amps when used as outputs. Two IO-Link master ports are also available, which offer an additional 32 points of configurable discrete I/O when used with Turck IO-Link hubs.

These devices can be used as remote safety I/O, or even operated as a standalone safety controller for local safe I/O. This allows the implementation of safety functions without the need for a safety PLC while still providing safety diagnostics and general purpose I/O data to a higher level non-safety PLC.

Integrating Fluid Power Into Safety Functions:

Safety functions are the Safety Related Parts of the Control Circuit which reduce risk to an acceptable level by the safety and reliable removal of power from hazardous motion and other sources. Pneumatic and Hydraulic cylinders are still the primary sources of motion in Industrial Manufacturing Machines. One of the leading causes of injury is the uncontrolled rapid motion of pneumatic cylinders when clearing a jam because pressure has not been relieved. To assure reliable operation of these Safety Functions, the failure mode of these fluid power devices must be understood and managed. The seminar will review the selection and design of safeguarding circuits with emphasis on the incorporation of fluid power devices.- Instructor: Heinz Knackstedt-C&E Safety Specialist

New From Turck: Pressure Transmitters Developed For Demanding Applications

Recently, Turck introduced the PT2000 line of pressure transmitters, which offer a welded stainless steel measuring cell for increased durability and increased chemical compatibility. The PT2000 offers a solution that has no elastomer seals and all wetted materials are 316L stainless steel. This makes the solution uniquely capable to meet the environmental needs in water pumping, hydraulic, and refrigeration applications.

With its gel filled housing, the PT2000 eliminates problems caused by condensation in applications with a wide range of temperatures, such as pumping ground water. Additionally, the housing is more compact than existing solutions, suiting it for more applications with space constraints. The PT2000 is also capable of handling pressures up to 1000 bar.

The PT2000 comes equipped with a standard M12 connector that is available in multiple wiring configurations to allow for easy integration into existing applications. The new pressure transmitter is also available with process connections such as NPT, BSPP, and SAE, which are commonly used in North American hydraulic applications.

Improve Safety in Demanding Environments With Turck's New Preassembled Meltric Connector Cable Assemblies

To improve worker safety in industrial environments, Turck has introduced a new pre-assembled Meltric connector offering with arc protection. The products offer a complete cable assembly solution, saving labor and installation time and ensuring reliability.

To protect against arcing, the Meltric series connectors feature spring-loaded demating technology inside an enclosed arc chamber, along with mating and demating shutters to shield users from live parts. Users are able to safely connect and disconnect the devices under load.  For additional safety, these connectors will only mate with their designated connector class, and demate and break load by the push of a
button directly on the connector.

Each Meltric connector is switch and horsepower rated, so one device can be used as both a connector and disconnect switch. Operations are streamlined by removing the need for a separate disconnect switch in applications that require a line-of-sight disconnect.

Ideal for use with high-powered electrical equipment, these connectors can serve as both a connector and a disconnect switch. The ability to have a quick disconnect connector allows a simplified motor change-out process. This new Meltric connector offering can be simply disconnected with the push of a button and they meet all required electrical safety guidelines.
